Why a BASELINE Test?

Concussions can produce a wide array of symptoms, which poses a challenge for coaches, trainers, parents and health professionals involved in the care of an injured athlete. The time-course for recovery also varies widely from athlete to athlete, making it impossible to employ a “cookie-cutter” approach to concussion rehabilitation and return-to-play timelines.

Currently, there is no reliable diagnostic test or marker that can be used to identify a concussion when it’s occurred, or conversely, when it’s resolved.

For this reason, a growing emphasis has been placed on objective baseline testing protocols that can be used to track an athlete’s recovery and serve as a tangible measurement for return-to-play readiness. By measuring an athlete’s “normal” level of functioning, we are better able to gauge the level of impairment that may exist post-injury by performing comparative testing.

We use ImPACT at baseline to assess neurocognitive function (memory, reaction time, processing speed, etc.). We also assess certain areas of physical performance such as balance.

Concussions 101

One of the best words to use to describe the NHL this year is Concussion.  Concussions are not only affecting NHL players, they are beginning to be more prevalent in minor hockey and soccer too.  I also bet you didn’t know that concussions are one of the more common injuries in female hockey players!  The following is a great video that describes what happens to the brain, the signs and symptoms of a concussion and the proper procedures that need to be taken before somebody can return to activity after a concussion.

Safe Snow Removal

With the first snow fall happening today, it is a good time to go over some tips that will help prevent back injuries while shoveling snow this winter.

  • Shovel frequently: Try not to let all the snow pile up before starting to shovel; frequent shoveling allows you to move smaller amount of snow which will be less strenuous.
  • Pick the right shovel: Use a lightweight shovel, preferably a pusher-type.  If you use a metal shovel, spray it with Teflon first, so snow will not stick to it.
  • Push, don’t throw: If possible it is always best to push the snow to the side rather than throwing it.  This helps to avoid lifting heavy amount of snow.
  • Bend at your knees and hips: It is important to use your legs and arms to lift the snow, while keeping your back straight or neutral.
  • Take a break: If you feel tired or short of breath, stop and take a rest.  If you feel any sudden back or chest pain, stop immediately.  If the chest pain persists, see a doctor immediately.  If the back pain persists, Middlesex Spine and Sport Clinic is here to help.
